Which smartphone?

Santa Claus choosing smartphone

For the past decade, I've been on a quest to find the perfect smartphone that aligns with my expectations of security and privacy.

Then I met Santa Claus!

I don't expect you to believe me, but on 24 December 2023, I actually had a chat with Santa Claus. Here's how it went down.

  • Santa Claus: Ho Ho Ho! I'm in a fantastic mood and ready to grant you anything you desire.
  • Me (naughty boy): How about a supercar that transforms into a submarine and an aircraft, all while being faster than a Tesla?
  • Santa Claus: Easy there, boy. Elon isn't quite ready to deliver that yet. Ask for something else, and I'll make sure to deliver.
  • Me: Give me a smartphone that respects my privacy and fulfills my cybersecurity needs.
  • Santa Claus: On second thought, do you want leather seats for your supercar?
  • Me: Why not the smartphone I asked for?
  • Santa Claus: GFY (as Elon said).
  • Me: Fine, make it red then.
  • Moral of the story:

After a decade of research, I'm still on the hunt for a functional smartphone that lives up to my expectations of privacy and security. It seems we have to settle for the lesser evil.

    * For now, I have settled on an iPhone, but I go great lengths to fortify its security.

    * I was among the first in the world to pre-order the Librem phone from Purism, but their lack of communication and delays infuriated me, so I canceled my order. Do your own research.

    * If you opt for standard Android phones, it's your funeral. At the very least, consider the F-droid app store.
