Many of you may claim, "Yes, I update my laptop regularly." I am going to share with you my update routine so that you can identify if you are missing anything.
Step 1: Update Antivirus Signatures
In my case, it involves (a) opening the Kaspersky settings from the taskbar and (b) clicking on "Database Update." This step will update the signatures of known viruses.
Step 2: Update Any Programs
This, of course, depends on which antivirus you use. In my case, it involves (a) accessing Kaspersky settings, (b) navigating to More Tools, (c) selecting Manage Applications, and (d) choosing Software Updater. This step will update any programs that Kaspersky can automatically update.
Step 3: Windows Update
This is done using Start/Settings/Windows Update/Check for Updates. This will update some of the Windows applications. Please note that this may not update all Microsoft applications. I will cover that in Steps 4 and 5 below.
Please note that the Windows 11 update available today (9 Jan 2024) is a bit slow; so, please make sure that your laptop is fully charged or connected to the power supply.
Step 4: Microsoft Office Update
This is done by starting Microsoft Word/Account/Update Options/Update Now. As expected, this will update Office programs.
Step 5: Microsoft Store Update
Start "Microsoft Store," click on Library (bottom left corner), and click on "Get updates" (top right corner). This will update many programs, games, etc. from the Microsoft Store.
Step 6: Browser Updates
Almost every browser, including Microsoft Edge, requires manual updates.
- For Brave Browser: Click on the burger icon (top right), then click on "Help," and click on "About Brave."
- For Chrome Browser: Click on triple dots (top right), then click on "Help," and click on "About Google Chrome."
- For Microsoft Edge: Click on triple dots (top right), then click on "Help and Feedback," and click on "About Microsoft Edge."
Last Step: Other Applications
When using other applications such as a VPN or game, etc., check if updates are available.
Stay updated, stay safe.
